My Natural Hair Routine

This blog is highly anticipated! Outside of questions about style and home decor, I get the most questions about my hair.

  • What products are you using?

  • How do you apply products?

  • How do you get your curls so defined?

I usually respond to comments and DMs directly, but I thought it was time to make a video and put in in a blog post so that I could walk you guys through my hair process, step by step. So, before we get into it, below are few things to note about my natural hair journey.

  • I started transitioning to natural in 2014.

  • I transitioned for 18 months before big chopping in 2015.

  • I have low porosity hair.

  • My curls are mostly 3C and 4A.

  • I try to use mostly natural, clean products, and I’m a big supporter of using black-owned brands.

  • I get my hair professional trimmed 3-4 times a year. I usually always make one of those trims a straight hair trim (i.e. I get a blow out and then trim my hair).

I share this to give you context, but also to encourage you to learn about YOUR hair. Each of our journeys are unique and often our hair responds differently to products. I want to share what works for me in hopes that it works for you too, but if it doesn’t — please don’t give up. Keep trying to find what works for you. It really is a game of trial and error. I’ve used and tried ALOT of products over the years, and I’ve had good years with my hair and bad. It is a journey!

With that, below I’m sharing my wash and go process and linking out the products that I use.

My Products and Process

Before I start to wash my hair, I prep it by pre-pooing with OrganiGrow Redo PrePoo and separating it in four sections. If you have medium to deeply dense hair, I recommend you section off your hair and work in sections. This will guarantee that your are applying product to all of the strands of hair.

SHAMPOOS

You need to shampoo your hair to keep your scalp clean. A healthy scalp is the key to hair growth. Talk to your natural hair stylist about how often they recommend you to shampoo, but whatever you do make sure you’ve incorporated it into your routine.

My favorites:

CONDITIONERS

After rinsing out the shampoo, I use a hydrating conditioner. Again I apply it section by section. I love the Carol’s Daughter Black Vanilla Hydrating Conditioner and have been using that one lately. The slip pf it is excellent and my hair is always super moist are I use it.

My favorites:

DEEP CONDITIONER

Since I have low porosity hair, which basically means that my hair has a harder time absorbing moisture, I deep condition with heat every week. I usually leave my deep conditioner on for at least 30 minutes and sit under a hooded dryer to apply heat.

My favorite deep conditioner:

LEAVE IN CONDITIONER

I currently style my hair with all Up North Naturals products, and that starts with the leave in conditioner. . After rinsing out the deep conditioner, I apply the leave in conditioner - I use Up North Naturals Hydrating Hair Milk - to soaking wet hair and work it in. Again, applying section by section.

STYLER

Once my leave in conditioner is in, I apply styler. I just use a dime size of the Up North Naturals Curl Ease Styling Lotion to each section of my hair. Depending on your hair’s texture and density you might need to use more, but a dime size works really well for my hair. I’ve used more in the past and didn’t get the results I wanted, so apply light at first and see how your hair responds.

GEL

Now to my favorite part, defining those curls with gel. I use the Up North Naturals 8-Oil Defining Gelly. This gel is hands down the best gel I’ve EVER used. It gives you a defined curls without the crunch. I apply this liberally to my hair and pay extra attention to my roots. If you apply liberally your hair might be a little “flat” the first day or two, but I love for my wash and go to last at least a week and with this method, they will! I also use the shingle method to apply, and apply section by section, piece by piece. It does take some time - but you won’t regret it when you see your results.
